Turtle Snacks: Edible Six Pack Rings

So, I’m sure you’ve seen it – those terrible photos of sea creatures choking on plastic six pack rings. They get wrapped around necks and confused for food each and every time they end up floating out to sea. For me, it doesn’t get sadder. I’m not sure why I feel so much for these little creatures, but I really do. At one time, I thought cutting the rings was all you needed to do (I can’t even count how many times I’ve done that, making sure to get all those little spaces in between where the scissors don’t want to fit) but they still try and eat it even when it’s cut apart, so basically it still sucks a lot.

Glass bottles in cardboard are still a great option no matter where you are, but if you happen to be in Florida there is a cool beer company called Saltwater Brewery that has started to make rings out of the leftovers from their brewing process that is completely edible. This new material will not only avoid harming the marine life, but will actually help enhance it by providing little snacks when and if they end up in front of a turtles mouth.

It’s some pretty cool stuff and it seems to be just as sturdy as plastic. It makes you wonder how many plastic things could be made with compostable materials instead of plastic. Keep your eyes open for it and maybe even consider asking your local shop to carry it or ask a bigger brewer if they might want to join in and help out our floating friends too.
