Aerial Yoga Swings are Amazing

When I first saw a class listing at my local yoga studio for aerial silk yoga I thought that the yoga community had finally taken it too far. Whats next, ceiling yoga? But I gave it a try and now I’m completely hooked.

You need a little bit of a yoga background in order to start, just so your body is a tiny bit stretchy and you don’t injure yourself just trying to get in there, but you really don’t need to be a circus performer. Once you learn a few moves it’s kind of like just sitting in a giant stretchy swing and since the silk spreads out, you can hold a yoga pose for a while and let gravity stretch you out with out needing tons of muscles to do some of the bigger inversions, like head stands and what not. It was actually really comfy, easy, fun, and enjoyable while still giving you the benefits of a full yoga class.

If you don’t have a studio that offers it near you, or if you just want to take the practice home, it’s really easy to get one shipped to you and install your own home aerial yoga hammock.

It screws right into your ceiling (make sure you attach it to a beam or ask for help locating the ceiling joist so it is very secure) or you can take it outside and attach it to a tree and play with it as much as you want. 🙂

There are a few good books and videos out there to teach you some moves, but the best is just experimenting with it and seeing which stretch your body needs on that specific day. Most people spend the majority of their day hunched over a computer or scrunched into a car, so balancing it out with a wide open inversion that gets your shoulders pulled wayyyy back really helps you reset back to center and feel good again. There is also so much to be said about anything that helps get the blood flowing for detoxifying and re-energizing your whole system.

Here are a couple books you might be interested in checking out if you get a silk for yourself or even if you just want to be prepared for class. Soaring with the Soul is the loveliest of them all in my opinion because of all the pretty art – it’s just fun to look at and page through.
